Praise and Worship: The Cure for Spiritual Numbness

1 Chronicles 16:23-31

Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.

Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him.

Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. Tremble before him, all the earth!

The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations,

“The LORD reigns!”

There was a time in my life when praise and worship outside of a corporate worship or church setting was difficult for me. And even in those settings I would feel awkward because to be honest – I was spiritually numb and emotionally depleted. People were raising their hands, singing aloud and some with tears streaming down their faces – all in reverence to God. And I was in the midst of all of that – I felt like an outsider looking in.

Watch the video and learn how Praise and Worship will cure your spiritual numbness and bring life to your relationship with God!

What did these people have that I didn’t? or What did they know that I wasn’t aware of?

Now that I have a much more robust and active praise and worship discipline in my life, I can tell you for certain it has everything to do with a more intimate relationship with God.

Developing the habit of praising and worshiping God whether in or out of a church setting is what ushers you into fulfilling intimacy with God.

The words “praise” and “worship” in the Hebrew and the Greek each have a few different meanings.

setting an intention to make praise and worship a part of your daily life will surely cure spiritual numbness and bring life to your relationship with God!

Praise

Praise” means to use the hand, to boast, to rave, to profess and to celebrate. Thus our praises to God should be to celebrate Him, to boast about Him, to rave about Him and to raise our hands toward Him.

In our idol-driven world of entertainment we are devoted fans (or “stans”) to certain celebrities. We celebrate them, boast about them, rave about them and wave our hands to their music to show how much we appreciate them. You praise your celebrity crushes and idols in much of the same way you’re supposed to be praising God.

And though it’s the same premise…praise of the Almighty Lord God should be done with more fervor, more passion, more emotion and more excitement than of that of your favorite celebrity or entertainer!

The popular Psalm 150 tells us exactly how to praise God:

Psalm 150

Praise the Lord.

Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.

Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.

Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.

Let everything that has breath Praise the Lord.

As you can see from Psalm 150 and all throughout the Bible, music is a major part of praise and worship. Take sometime and make a playlist of true praise songs. Although there are some great songs to encourage us, make sure to choose songs that are all about exalting God. After this activity, you will likely find yourself ready for worship.

Reading Psalm 150 is a powerful way to give praise to God and inject more vibrancy into your relationship with God.

Worship

To “worship” God is to prostrate, to bow down, or to fall down before Him. I liken it to the physical manifestation of humbling yourself and yielding to the Lord.

When I’m in a posture of worship – whether physically or mentally – I tend to forget about myself, my needs, my wants and my desires.

Pure and genuine worship is one of the few ways to experience the presence of God. Back when I was spiritually numb and bankrupt, I didn’t realize how much worship of God was so connected to setting the stage for intimacy with Him.

If you feel awkward in attempting to worship God, don’t allow that to stop you. The devil wants you to feel strange and out of sorts about worshiping God. He knows that the less time you spend humbling yourself before God, the more time you will spend outside of the will of God.

One way to get into the habit of worship is to recite and memorize verses of praise and worship. Right now I recite from Revelations 4:8 and 4:11:

“Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,

who was, and is, and is to come.”                                                                                                  from Revelations 4:8

“You are worthy, our Lord and God,

to receive glory and honor and power,

for you created all things,

and by your will they were created

and have their being.”                                                                                                          Revelations 4:11
