Biblical goal setting is a way to establish, pursue and achieve goals based on the Word of God. Learn the 7 Daily Habits of Biblical Goal Setting and the scriptures I use to set goals and pursue God’s purpose for my life and how you can too!

7 Daily Habits of Biblical Goal Setting

1. Pray Before You Proceed

Before you establish any goals or plans make sure you take the time to ask God first what goals, dreams and plans you should be pursuing. It might not be what you think!

Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

2. Give God’s Power a Chance to Work

When God gives you a GreatBIG goal that you believe is beyond your capabilities, remember, He will give you the strength to achieve it. This is the place where your faith can grow by leaps and bounds – therefore, don’t allow fear to hijack your faith. Trust in the Power of God.

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us…

2 Timothy 1:7

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].

3. Write Down Your Goals

Studies have shown that writing down your goals will significantly increase the probability of achieving them. The Bible teaches the concept as well. So don’t just think about what you want to accomplish, put your thoughts on paper.

Habakkuk 2:2

Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that whoever reads it may run with it.

4. Establish Your Action Steps

Biblical goal setting is a noble act, however, we must still take action to see our goals come to fruition. After you establish your goals, write down the actions and steps that you will need to achieve them. Again, bring this to God in prayer.

Proverbs 24:27

Do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house.

Proverbs 16:9

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

5. Review Your Goals Frequently

This is a habit that I’ve started implementing recently with reaching more readers through this website. I was a person who always set goals but never really stayed on track because I would veer off onto other things and not stay focused on my original plan.

Consequently, on a regular basis, weekly, monthly and quarterly (depending on the goal) I take the time to review my goals as well as seek God about my progress.

Romans 12:12

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Proverbs 4:25

Keep your eyes focused on what is right, and look straight ahead to what is good.

6. Overcome Fear & Obstacles

There are all kinds of road blocks, distractions, and obstacles that can accompany you on the path to reaching your God-given pursuits. Even in the face of opposition and difficulty, continue on the path of pursuing your goal. Remember – God is ALWAYS with you!

Phil. 3:14

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

7. Serve God in Excellence

As you establish, pursue and achieve your goals, remind yourself that it is God that your are ultimately serving. I’ve learned that no matter the goal, workplace or person – God always requires that I work and serve in excellence.

Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
